My Response to the Disinvitation to Inspire’s International Women’s Day Event.
I have decided to make a statement in light of the recent news articles and media posts with regard to my removal as speaker from Inspire’s International Women’s Day Event.
Originally, I chose not to share socially or draw attention to this deeply upsetting turn of events. Now that global media has begun publishing various articles and news posts, I feel it’s imperative that I too provide a response to my followers… the same response that I conveyed to the event organizers.
***
It has taken me a while to wrap my head around your decision to remove me as INSPIRE’s International Women’s Day “Inspire Inclusion” Keynote Speaker. I was hurt. I was angry. But most of all I was heartbroken.
I’ve been a speaker for nearly 10 years and have told my story in front of real estate agents, business managers, garbage collectors, CEOs, motorbike dealers, government agencies and many diverse women’s groups. Not once has someone (to my face, to the organizers, nor anonymously) ever claimed to have been offended by my presentation. Not once.
I must assume you hired me because I speak about overcoming sexism and failures. Correct? I speak to inspire and motivate. I speak about obstacles, and how to overcome them. I speak about bravery and growth and standing up for one another.
I don’t believe you hired me because I was a soldier and a cop. While these jobs are part of my story (and I’m very grateful to have had these experiences), they do not define me as a human being. As a Jewish woman, I would never be offended if a Palestinian woman were to speak about her obstacles and life journey. I thought that’s what women were supposed to do for each other – listen and support!
Instead, it seems you have chosen to give in to threats and hate – and this is the saddest part. You removed me and made a statement to your audience, without even giving me a chance to make my own. Why wasn’t I contacted personally? Don’t you think I at least deserved that tiny shred of dignity?
I will not pursue legal action, although I have been advised to do so. That’s not who I am. Right now, I am sad. I’m mad. And I am so disappointed. For now, I can only live in hope. I hope for peace. I hope that humans can learn to treat each other with respect and love. And I hope the future includes brave women who understand the fragile thread holding all of us together.
Leah Goldstein is a stunning example of living a life without limits.
By age 17, she was the World Kickboxing Champion. Shortly thereafter, Leah enlisted in the Israeli Military and became one of the few female instructors of the elite Commando division. Leah then transitioned into a special-forces unit, combating terrorism and violent crimes. The extreme lifestyle of the secret police eventually took its toll, and she found her salvation on a bicycle.
Leah Goldstein is a former professional cyclist, a personal trainer and motivational speaker currently residing in British Columbia, Canada. She battled through a 10-year career as a professional cyclist – and eventually to the longest single stage race in the world, Race Across America. Leah retired from thirteen years on the pro road race circuit in the spring of 2010, following an accident in which she broke both of her arms, and is now concentrating on ultra endurance racing. She recently participated in the 30th anniversary of the 2011 Race Across America, known as “the World’s Toughest Bicycle Race,”winning Best Overall Female, Best in Age Group, Queen of the Mountains, Queen of the Prairies, and Rookie of the Year, despite suffering from Shermer’s Neck after Day 4.
On the evening June 26th,2021 Leah Goldstein made history. At 52 years old, Leah became the 1st female ever to WIN the overall SOLO division of the gruelling Race Across America in its 39 year history.
From crashes to podiums, and fear to triumph – Leah Goldstein’s story gives us a glimpse of what’s truly possible from a life without limits.
Hi Leah, it’s Claire. I was so upset, and I wish I could say surprised, at your revoked invitation. I never thought that in our lifetime we would once again experience the abhorrent and blatant anti-semitism that has reared its ugly head to the levels we are seeing without shame or consequences. I am sorry this happened to you. As a feminist, I am ashamed that this event claims to be celebrating IWD. Wishing you all the best.
Leah – I am almost embarrassed to be reaching out now; like many others I am horrified by your “disinvitation”, but more about that in a second.
My sheepishness comes from not sending our congratulations for your unbelievable achievement at RAAM 2021. My wife and I are avid cyclists and are well aware of the demands that race places on its participants. I have read both “Going the Distance: The George Thomas Story” and “Hell on Two Wheels”; the physical and mental adversity some of us humans can overcome are truly incredible. If I may, I’d like to pay homage now. And yes, “No Limits” will soon be part of our library.
Now, about INSPIRE. I am in my 60s, raised on a farm in Alberta. I was taught from a very age that antisemitism was based on an irrational hatred that I should never tolerate, and that it could raise its ugly head at any time. Here we are yet again, but what may be even more concerning is that groups like INSPIRE are not necessarily antisemitic but their fear of the reprisal from the real haters exceeds their ability to display courage in the face of it. That’s a truly gutless reaction that always ends badly.
We have close Jewish friends; our relationships are based on shared interests and experiences, and until the last few months the fact they are Jewish had nothing to do with our friendship. No longer – we have reached out to each and every one of them, offering unconditional support, understanding and sanctuary, regardless of the circumstance BECAUSE they are Jewish. We offer you the same. Unfortunately it does have a limit. There is no way in hell we are going cycling with you. :>)
The irony is so rich it pains me. An international WOMEN’s day event goes sideways because of radicals objection to a speakers connection to Israel. WOMENS Day. A day to celebrate and support women. Israel… you know the country in the middle east that actually supports women and treats them as equals.
This story made me read about you. You are exactly the kind of women that young women should look up. Silencing people like you is a major step back for Women.
Hello
I live near Peterborough and have tried very hard to contact the organizers and register my concern that they have surrendered to the tyranny of a small group of radicals. But to no avail. All contact info for them has been removed or shut down. Their actions towards you are both despicable and cowardly. Kudos to you for rising above it all.
I wish you continued success, and the knowledge that most of us here in the Kawarthas support you!
Woke identitarianism, which treats people not as individuals but as avatars of whatever groups they can be assigned to, is an absolute cancer in Western society. Your experience is sadly one more casualty in woke elitists’ war against Enlightenment values of liberalism, tolerance, freedom of thought, and equal justice. INSPIRE will be hearing from me, for what it’s worth. You are not alone!
I would have said this was unbelievable, but in light of the world events, when terrorism is viewed as fun and entertaining and hate and jealousy have become the guiding light, unbelievable it is not.
Keep doing the right thing, Ms. Goldstein. The right thing always wins. You are the winner.
I came across your ‘disinvitation’ story and wanted to state, I support you! Ironically the group who is fighting ‘racism’ and protesting you being a speaker, is a racist group itself.
I am disgusted , embarrassed & ashamed to be a Canadian. There is a moral rot that has permeated Canadian society. What used to be right is now wrong , what used to be good is now evil. Anti Semitism sugar coats what is now taking place in society. Today , it is outright Jew hatred. Singly out Jews smacks of the 1930s in Nazi Germany. Diversity , equality & inclusivity does not apply to Jews. No different than when the Israeli junior ice hockey teams were recently , initially , uninvited to the world tournament. Took the pressure of the NHL & Gary Bettman to have that decision reversed.
They should be ashamed of themselves giving into bullying mob behaviour. It’s really their loss though, and the event will likely suffer. On the other hand, I hope the publicity you’re getting will greatly increase your visibility platform – plus you’ll have more to talk about and can teach others about overcoming obstacles such as antisemitism and the unexpected places that it rears its ugly head.
I read about your disinvitation in this morning’s Calgary Herald and, as an 82 year old Canadian WASP, I am appalled and disgusted anyone would be so openly antisemitic and cruel. Prior to reading the article in the paper I had not heard of you but I must say I feel nothing but pride for the things you have done in your life and what you have accomplished in your life. I wish you all the best in the future and if you were ever to speak in Calgary I would be honored to come to such an even.
Awful decision that makes these organizers, however well-intentioned they may be look like they are either cowardly, unable to think logically (what does your mandated military service from 30 years ago have to do with speaking at this event – you are not representing the IDF, you are representing yourself as an accomplished athlete and a resident of Canada), or worst-case, some anti-semitism at play by key decision makers. I would like to think not, since you were previously invited and they obviously know you are Jewish. Sounds a lot like craven leadership decision and a terrible look for Canadians who see their society as a tolerant one. It’s also a ridiculous and dangerous precedent – should we disinvite Iranian-Canadian medical professionals because we don’t like what the Iranian government does? How about our Sikh-Canadian athletes, do we now shun them from speaking or any events because we don’t like the politics of a tense situation 1/2 way around the world? Where does it end?
This is why cowardice always leads to danger for any enlightened society. On a positive note, know that most Canadians were seriously appalled by this decision and I credit you with a gracious response to the organizers – it’s not a surprise you have overcome a lot and achieved a lot with an attitude like that. Just keep going, keep soaring. Sorry this happened to you, but it won’t break you. (It might break them, though – another loss).
The depths of how low and hypocritical IWD can go is beyond one’s imagination. They do not deserve someone of your calibre and accomplishments. This is all about religion. Whatever lame and irresponsible excuse that they come up with, they have revealed how shameful, biased and ugly this organization is. Please know that we are with you and stand by you. No limits! Thank YOU for being the true inspiration.
I’m putting all donators on notice. This will not stand. I cannot support your political views on Trump, but happy to go after the anti semites at inspires and those who support them
Thank you 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇨🇦🙏
absolutely appalling. INSPIRE should be ashamed of themselves.
Keep your head up and know that they aren’t as inspiring as they think they are.
I hope those who were to have attended reconsider their choice.
I am disgusted that this has happened to you
While I understand your reluctance to take legal action I sincerely hope that you reconsider
For all Jewish people it is important that we use our voices and actions to combat anitsemitism and not remain silent as was done in the past
I want to join many before me to express outrage at what is happening in our beautiful country. Thank you for serving Israel, thank you for being a role model to many women in Canada. I will share your story with my kids and hope they have a chance to meet you one day. It’s ironic that the people that banned you are now hiding and removing their digital footprint.
I would like to send an email to the organizers of the event that disinvited you. Can you provide an email address?
I am angry. A group of likely antisemitic, and certainly ignorant uninformed people decided to remove you and prevent you for speaking. This is in inciting hatred and inciting hatred is illegal in Canada.

Disinviting you with all your accomplishments is insulting and sadly not surprising given the society we live in today. Appeasement to those who wish to see you not speak only emboldens them.
Such a regrettable loss to the folks in Peterborough who won’t have the chance to hear you speak! You have such a life-affirming story; happily for me, at least, the silliness from Peterborough has led me to reading about it. Best wishes!
Inspire’s decision was most uninspiring. The organizers betrayed their ignorance, lack of courage, and thoughtlessness by disrespecting an invited guest who truly is an inspiration. They’re not a group I’d want anything to do with.
As a resident of Peterborough, I am saddened that Inspire has withdrawn their invitation for you to speak. I will confess that I had not intention of attending as I think Inspire is a useless organization and I would do nothing to support their existence. I hope that this finally puts an end to them.
Their is discussion here about arranging to have you speak at another time and a sponsor has come forward. I look forward to the opportunity to hear you speak at that time.
Dear Leah As a woman & supporter of Israel, living just north of you in Kamloops I am appalled by the ongoing & growing antisemitism in our country. I weep at this insult to you ànd marvel at your strength, but I do know something of the Jewish character❤️. I will read your book & continue to support Israel in every way possible. I send my love. Sharon
Leah, I am angry on your behalf. The folks at Inspire are small minded and have shown their true colours. Seeing them for what they are, it is better that you have nothing to do with them. They are not of your caliber. Their indefensible decision does not diminish you or your accomplishments one iota. You continue to inspire as you stand true to yourself and what you believe. Many of us in Canada look on with admiration and respect for you.
I am so incredibly disappointed in this decision to disinvite you from speaking at their event. Just know that I stand with you as an admirer of your extraordinary life and talents.
Hello
I sincerely hope this message finds you well. I just wanted to reach out as a life long resident of Peterborough. I do not support what happened to you. Canada is a cultural mosaic which should be inclusive. Our diversity makes us stronger not weaker.
Again on behalf of the what I feel is the majority of people in Peterborough I am sorry that this happened to you.
Leah Goldstein was invited by INSPIRE because of her extraordinary achievement as a cyclist, and now she’s “disinvited” because she completed her military service in Israel, shorthand for: she’s being targeted as an Israeli Jew. This is reminding me of the recent cancellation of the Jewish-themed play, The Runner, by both the Belfry Theatre and the Push Festival because of the hostile and virulent pro-Hamas lobby. Another antisemitic attack, another victory for Hamas. When are government agencies, the UN, universities, and local organizations going to have the courage to stop be bullied by a terrorist organization? Answer: never.
This is heartbreaking. The insanity in today’s world has become unimaginable . I was appalled this morning to hear the statistics on the number of people in our country who claim to have never heard of the holocaust. Years ago I took a class in University “Jewish American Literature “ and my heart melted for the Jewish people and what they have endured.
This disinvite is even more shameful because of the International women’s Day nature itself. The celebration that was initiated by Jewish women Clara Zetkin and Rosa Luxemburg. The day which is supposed to celebrate civil awareness, anti-sexism and anti-discrimination.
Leah Goldstein- you are extraordinary!
Dear Leah
My first emotion was that of rage … 😡
And than I stopped and remembered our History. That of a continuous Antisemitic bleeding that has followed us ( Jews) for hundreds of years and seems to only continue at a greater flow…. And yet , we are still here and we shall forever remain. The reason for your dismissal and the way it was done is a clear admission to what evoked it !
I can think of hundred of thousands of women who would love to own one little stone of the Crown you are wearing.
I don’t think I need to tell you to hold your Head high and look forward with pride and dignity . Cry all you need to because after all you have a heart and a soul that someone has pierced with an Arrow. And when you get up … , shake the dust off and look ahead. You were born to Greatness !
Don’t let anything or anyone plant a doubt in your mind.
You are my Hero !
Stay strong
What a crazy world we live, with such absurd antisemitism. I tried to find anything belonging to the INSPIRE: The Women’s Portrait Project, but only found the phone still available, will be phoning them tomorrow to voice my disgust. Antisemitism must be held accountable. This is the number in case anyone else is trying to figure out how to help – Phone: (705) 957-0808 (also this is public information as of the time of posting)
Leah i am not Jewish, I am male, have daughters and a son and live in Kelowna.
In my younger days i worked on a Kibbutz. I found Israeli society to be as inclusive as any other western democracy- and in the north where i worked, there were Druze Israelis, Christian-Arab Israelis, and Muslim arab Israelis. All had the right to vote and live as full Israeli citizens (in contrast to the neighbouring countries – and despite the existential threat the country faced).
What i found on the kibbutz was that (sadly) Jewish people understand the world they live in. Its a world where a Canadian women’s group closed their minds and eyes and pretended not to see the horrific sexual torture that Hamas used on Oct 6 – on all ages and genders – but certainly…on WOMEN. In that regard, INSPIRE is no different than those who have put their head in the sand as antisemitism arose in other eras. And i mean that last statement in the most damning way.
Shame on INSPIRE. At the same time, i hope you shake this off. There will always be extremists – if i can shoulder a tiny piece of the outrage for you… consider it done. Don’t let the bastards get you down.
I never knew of your existence until I read the FP article. Now I wish you were my best friend, your life accomplishments are truly inspiring. I could learn so much from someone like yourself.
Thanks for sharing your story. My heart is heavy for you and all Jewish persons everywhere. Jewish hatred is real.
You were disinvited by the IWD because you are a Jew, not because you were an IDF soldier. Inspire Inclusion, unless you are Jewish. There is no justification in defensive of such an evil act. Women must unite against such evil and boycott the event. #BOYCOTTIWDINSPIRE
Israel is at war today because of the unspeakable atrocities committed against women on October 7. If there was ever a moment in human history for women of the world to unite in solidarity against such evil now is the time. Sadly, the response by women’s groups globally denouncing Oct 7 acts of violence against women has been slow in coming and often muted. Why? The victims are Jewish.
This decision by the IWD to disinvite you because you are Jewish, although hurtful and bigoted, does not define you. However, it does define IWD as an organization who is bigoted and intolerant of those who hold opposing views.
The numerous finger shaped hearts on IWD website ring hollow this evening.
I am so sorry this has happened to you! Always be proud of your Jewish heritage and it speaks volumes to who you are by the way you responded so graciously. What an incredible life story you have – you are an inspiration!!
